The class is full of well respectable people who have been training for various amounts of time. Some have been training for years whilst others may have only just started like you. We will all look after you.
In your first lesson, Sensei Adam will show you some fundamental aspects of the schools martial arts and will show you enough by the end of the class that should allow you to apply some basic defence techniques against punches and knives. You should complete the lesson feeling there is a lot more to learn and understand about you and those around you, and have a better understanding of what Ju Jutsu is all about.
Details of coming along and what you will need to bring can be found in the "Where to start" and "What to do next" sections of this page. If you have any other questions or concerns before coming along, please do get in contact with us. We are always happy to help.
What is Traditional Ju Jutsu / Jiu Jitsu?
Traditional Jiu Jitsu or Ju Jutsu (they mean the same thing) has been around for thousands of years and originated in Japan as the principle method used by warriors such as the Samurai. It is different from similarly named martial arts such as Brazilian Ju Jitsu (BJJ) in that BJJ is a relatively new sporting martial arts that comes from a competition style originally popular in Brazil. BJJ has a main focus to grapple an opponent on the floor much like a mixture of wrestling and Judo which is a subset of techniques from traditional Ju Jutsu. Traditional Ju Jutsu was developed over thousands of years of confrontations outside the confines of sporting rules. This makes it ideally suited for self defence and incorporates a much broader array of techniques and situational based solutions including dealing with common weapons and multiple attackers. Ju Jutsu actually means "soft technique", but do not consider that literally. By "soft", what it really means is to use less effort in order to overcome your opponent with a choice of final outcome against them. This is why it is such a fantastic art for people or all sizes, strengths and ages.
